Ascii
Art Ensemble di
Walter van der Cruijsen
Intro
The group (Walter van der Cruijsen, Luka Frelih, Vuk Cosic) met in Amsterdam
to materialize an idea that was floating in meetings at various european
Internet conferences and festivals during the last three years. Basically
the big goal was to come up with a net based moving ascii. The premises
of Worldwide Video Festival were at our disposal for a week in august
1998, thanx.
Immediate Goals
The very first things to do were the most obvious ones - the javascript
and java players for moving ascii images.

Mid Term Goals
After the two players are done, the idea is to create a fast converter
that would enable us to create moving ascii in real time.
Long Term Goals
After bringing moving ascii to the net through the mentioned steps,
the final goal - or one of the next steps - is to create a RealPlayer
G2 plug-in with the new file type.

What happened to the ascii
art ensemble?
We moved the original page (http://www.desk.org/a/a/e/first.html) --
too many new things have happened during the last 18 months. Hopefully
this page will be updated more frequently. Promised!
* free software:
The ascii art ensemble has
been supporting the development of new free tools and software to create
your own ascii media converter. Since the start several new projects
have been started, more artists and programmers created new software
and there were exhibitions, events and several public appearances.
First of all, the java-player.
the original version, the asciimator was made by Luka Frelih. This player
is public domain, so use it at your own risk. other players have been
made by Thomax Kaulman and Andreas Schiffler, who wrote more beautiful
sourcecodes. Note that this is really free software, which means that
it is still licensed (gnu) but you are free to use it.
*asciimator. the java-player
by Luka Frelih.
Originally bundled with deep.ascii - meme of the week last week. The
asciimator.java source.
* ova-in-scii player. by
Thomax Kaulmann.
This is another java player, which handles .gz text-files. Thomax also
offers ascii mode at OVA.
* libbgrab-1.8 by Andreas
Schiffler - escape to begin
This archive contains a lot for handling your video input. Linux / c++
there are more things at the esc to begin website, there is a ascii
video+talk reflector, an asteroid-remake to hit textobjects.
* asciiMovie b1.0.9.app,
a macintosh quicktime to ascii converter, by guillaume stagnaro - escape
to begin. drag and drop your videoclip and save it to text. next step
is to use the embedded application to convert streams, a quicktime plugin?
macintosh / realbasic. ascii mode at the open video archive by thomax
kaulmann - orang is server implementation. linux / real.
* older things
Pict2AsciiFAT 1.03 is an
.pict image file to ascii converter for macintosh ppc. although it is
stand-alone, it is scriptable and uses an engine, with which you can
scriptwrite .gif files, like spreadsheets into diagramms. Somehow i
have the idea that there is more to find.
* art media events:
net_condition, ZKM, Karlsruhe.
